Nature Recovery Strategy

How we are helping to restore and protect biodiversity and nature.

Enabling the recovery of nature

In recent years, biodiversity loss in the UK has become more obvious and urgent.

As a responsible landlord, we see it as our duty to help restore and protect biodiversity and nature. We know the benefits nature has on our residents' physical and mental wellbeing and want to create greener, more sustainable homes and communities, for now and the future.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity means having many different plants and animals, living and working together. This helps create a balanced and healthy environment.

Through resident surveys and feedback, we know that nature is important to you. That’s why we are increasing our efforts to ensure Clarion’s existing homes and communities are rich in biodiversity and have improved access to nature.

  • 70% of residents surveyed have told us that climate change is important to them personally.
  • 75% of residents surveyed are in favour of action to restore and protect nature.

Not only will creating and caring for green spaces help habitats thrive, but they are proven to have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing too.

“Green spaces have a positive impact on people’s overall mental health. They provide a sense of openness, reconnect individuals with nature, induce calmness, and significantly enhance wellbeing and mental health."

“This is especially vital for those who live within cities with limited access to green areas and would benefit greatly from connecting with nature.”

Clarion resident

In spring 2024, we published the Nature Recovery Strategy, shaped with the help of residents, that presents our commitments to:

  • improve health and wellbeing for residents, and anyone using Clarion’s sites, with more opportunities to engage with nature
  • give nature a central place when designing and managing neighbourhoods
  • increase biodiversity in all new developments and in up to five existing communities each year.

The need to recover, protect, and boost nature is critical, and we are taking immediate action so we can leave a positive legacy for generations to come.

Feeling inspired? Here’s how you can get involved

Together we can make a powerful difference. That is why we are holding events across the country to hear from residents about the nature recovery work you want to see in Clarion communities. This could include planting, gardening, composting, creating wildflower meadows, assembling and decorating bird boxes, and making bug hotels. Look out for events happening in your area, advertised locally.

In the meantime, why not enjoy nature by taking a walk in your nearest green space or listen to birdsong. If you'd like to do more, the Wildlife Trusts have lots of actions you can take for nature.
