Finding items for your home
When looking for items, be mindful of where to find them—consider both the risk of scams and the item's fire safety labels.
Where to find items
- Ask friends and family if they’re having a clear out – it might be something you need for your home
- Visit local furniture projects, charity shops, and car boot sales
Practical tips
- Carpet tiles are cheaper than fitted carpet, and quick and easy to install
- Wallpaper samples and paint card samples can be made into pictures
- Chairs can be re-covered with material such as tablecloth or other fabric
- YouTube tutorials can help with DIY tasks but remember - never do any work yourself on gas appliances or electrics
Safety tips for second-hand items
- Get all electric items – white goods, appliances, and lamps etc. - checked by a registered electrician (PAT testing). It’s a cost that can keep you safe.
- Check furniture fire regulations and toys for safety instructions.
