These inspiring volunteers share our belief that the internet is for everyone and driven by this passion, they are playing a crucial role in helping us bridge the digital divide.

Ola’s story

Ola began his journey with Clarion last year as a Digital Champion before becoming a Digital Champion Mentor and then a Neighbourhood Response Officer. His story showcases how becoming a Digital Champion can make a positive difference to people’s lives and gift you a priceless sense of fulfilment.

“I first heard about the Digital Champions role in June 2023. I found that Clarion’s goals aligned with the way I wanted to work and the kind of environment I wanted to work in, with residents being at the heart.

“As a Digital Champion, I worked with residents and anybody in the community that required support, including vulnerable and older people, or those who wouldn’t consider themselves digitally savvy. We provided devices and the digital support to get them online according to their needs.

“We had residents with varying vulnerabilities, such as hearing loss and language barriers, and we adapt the learning experience to each person.

“One resident came in frustrated because they didn’t know how to pay for parking online. After working with him he was able to start using it by himself. Other residents were unable to use their laptops, so we taught them basic skills. From there, they were able to progress, including making video calls so they could connect with loved ones. Just by knowing how to operate a mobile phone can connect them with friends and relatives rather than feeling lovely and having no one to talk to.

“People considering signing up should know that in the role, you don’t just give opportunities to others, but you gain new opportunities, too.”
